3/19/09 We received this e-mail from David's wife:
Dave passed away December 7, 2007. His heart simply wore out. Dave was always very proud of Tucson High and the band. I'm sure he would have enjoyed attending the 50th reunion.
Thank you, Mrs. Jonalie Bachmann

Mike Early
On Saturday Nov 15, 1958, Mike and five others from Troop 70 began camping in Upper Madera Canyon in the Santa Ritas. After setting up camp, all six started to the top of Mt. Wrightson (Mt. Baldy). Three turned around and survived. Three kept going but with fading light and not reaching the top, they started down. At Josephine Saddle they took the wrong trail. Mike soon fell and broke a leg. The three hunkered down for the night. At 9 pm and at about 8,000-ft elevation, it began to rain. At midnight it turned to snow. The kids probably died before dawn on the 16th. (Officially, his death is listed for Nov 15) For the first time in the 20th Century there was measureable snow in Tucson in November. On Sunday, there was 6.4 inches of snow in the city. Ironically, the weather forecast for the 15th, per the AZ Daily Star was for "relatively mild November temperatures today, with the expected high near 70 degrees." On the 14th, the official high at the Airport was 71 degrees. No mention of precipitation of any kind. Mike was to turn 16 on Nov 16. The three boys were found on Dec 4. This search led to the formation of the Southern Arizona Rescue Association.
